A member agency’s positive response to the Drought

During this 4TH year of drought, a lot of customers are experiencing drought fatigue, but so are the water providers that serve them. These have been trying years, with staffing and resources spread thin. Water agencies have risen to the task though, developing innovative outreach campaigns and implementing new water efficiency programs. All of your efforts deserve to be highlighted, but since there isn’t enough time and space to do this, I’m going to instead highlight one agency’s efforts. Located in the northern Sierra foothills, the Placer County Water Agency has been successful in their efforts to encourage customers and staff to keep up the good work. I hope their story will inspire you to hang in there too, as we continue to hope that several years of rain and snowfall are in the near future!

Some Final BMP Reporting Advice

Congratulations if you have already submitted your BMP reports, or maybe you are almost done! Either way, I know the last thing you want to hear is that there’s another important task you should complete, if you haven’t already done so. What I’m talking about is some final organizing and documentation. If you follow the advice I offer in this blog, you will be much better prepared for when the next reporting cycle comes around.

Things you should know about the Metering with Commodity Rates - BMP 1.3

This blog will cover common questions concerning this BMP, and also clarify some data requirements. As you should be aware, having metered connections, and billing the volume of water used with a commodity charge, provides a price signal that encourages customers to conserve water. Meters are also a tool that can be used to assist with leak detection on the customers-side of the meter. Regardless of whether your agency has been metered for decades or recently installed meters, you will want to complete the form thoroughly and correctly, as it’s one of the required Foundational BMPs. Smart Meter Installations at the Long Beach Water Department

Water meters that transmit readings to a networked system are becoming more common place in California, as water agencies install “Smart Meters” with Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) projects. Perhaps less common though, is a recent program implemented by the Long Beach Water Department. There, customers either voluntarily requested the installation of a Smart Meter, or they involuntarily received one because of abnormal water use. But, no matter the reason for installing Smart Meters, it’s what you do with the data that can make the installation of a Smart Meter a wise investment for a water utility. In this week’s blog, I write about some thought-provoking outcomes with the Long Beach program that I received from Dean Wang, water conservation specialist with the department.
